Abstract

What constitutes environmentally and socially sustainable development ? The importance of this question has been made apparent by global social and environmental problems, including continued widespread poverty and misery, directly related to current pattern s of economic growth. The Brundtland Commission has highlight ed the urgent need to undertake a search for answers to the question, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in the process (World Commission on Environment an d Development, 1987).
